Arlington Presbyterian Church is truly a church without walls! This community takes serious the greatest commandments to love the Lord your God with all of your heart, your soul, and your mind, and to love your neighbor as yourself. After a long discernment process, and by God's grace, our congregation sold their building to make room for much-needed affordable housing on the Columbia Pike Corridor of South Arlington.

The old building is torn down, and ground is broken to create homes for families in town. In the process, the congregation bought back two parcels of land behind the building to create a green space for the neighborhood.

We now worship in the chapel at Arlington United Methodist Church Center, and I have joined APC as the supply pastor.

This is an exciting time to be a part of Arlington Presbyterian Church as we discern the future of our ministry of welcome, nurture, service, and proclaiming the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Blessings,

Rev. Nancy Neal

Believing that God is calling us to examine who we are as a church community and how we are to engage with the surrounding community, the Arlington congregation will be engaged in mission redefinition for 2012. Much has been done already and much is coming. This space will be a regular update on the how, what, who, and why of our journey. The first two pieces give the recent history and some recent activity. The third piece is the pastor's focus for the first quarter of 2012. This was presented at our annual meeting earlier this year.

The 2nd quarter of 2012 was a time when we worked on getting ready for Sharon's sabbatical so that we could continue this work during the summer while she is away. Of course much of her sabbatical will include parallel work as she visits other faith communities who have done work similar to what APC is doing now - listening for God's call and taking a leap to follow that call.

We contracted with a new church development coach, the Reverend Shannon Kiser, and began working with her. A "Vision Team", volunteers from the congregation, was organized after a weekend congregational retreat in early May. This team has committed to daily spiritual practices of Bible study and prayer, regular community visits over the summer, monthly meetings with Shannon, and regular meetings of the team. The vision team volunteers are Susan Etherton, Jon Etherton, Kristine Gabster, Lorraine Gardner, Michelle Lanier, Linda Peebles, and Judy Robb. Also, Kristl Hathaway has volunteered to help with communication between the vision team and the wider congregation. There will also be regular updates from the vision team during Sunday services.

If you have questions, insights, or thoughts, please share them with us. We are excited about this journey with God and invite you to join us!

Recent Sermons

The sermons shared here are those preached during Sunday worship. The pastor now preaches from her iPad and so the formatting is connected with that. Also, not every word said on Sunday mornings makes it into the manuscript, but these will at least give you a sense of what goes on. May these be a blessing and if you have questions about anything you read here, please be in touch.

Music shows the breadth of the Spirit in our lives. From Tallis and Bach to modern expressions, our choir brings joy to worship and offers special music at Christmas, Easter and throughout the year.

The APC Adult Choir practices every Sunday at 9:15 a.m. in the Sanctuary.

(except during August when our choir takes a break).

APC Welcomes Your Voice

All are welcome to join the APC choir and share the gift of music. Being a member of the APC choir can be a truly rewarding experience. Just ask Diana Lewis-Chun!

“Why do I sing in APC’s choir? Besides the fact that I just love singing? And what does it mean to help lead worship through music? Honestly, I don't think of myself as being a leader at all when I don a choir robe and open my throat up front in the sanctuary. It's just what I do. Among other things, God is a God of beauty, and to be part of creating something beautiful to offer back to our Creator brings me joy. If that also leads others to lift their hearts and voices, so much the better!”

APC offers opportunities for disciples of all ages to grow in faith, including:

*Disciple Groups provide adults the opportunity to meet around a common interest.   Groups will form based on interest and leadership.  Current group offerings include theology, meals and conversations, fellowship, and Moving Forward, which supports our vision for our ministry, present and future.

*Presbyterian Women meet monthly for fellowship and Bible study (see additional information under “How We Serve”).
